Geochemical Signature of Rocks and Weathering Products in Luxembourg Roth Sabine 2007
Abstract This report examines the geochemical characteristics of rocks and weathering products in Luxembourg. It analyzes the chemical composition of major geological formations, including sandstones, shales, limestones, dolomites, marls, and quartzites, as well as their natural radioactivity. The study shows that the concentrations of chemical elements and radionuclides vary significantly depending on rock type and geological unit. Particular attention is given to uranium, thorium, radium, potassium, and several trace elements that influence the geochemical signature of the different formations. A major focus of the report is radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced from the decay of uranium and radium. The research investigates the factors controlling radon release and migration in soils and rocks, including mineral composition, grain size, moisture, and weathering processes. Overall, the document provides valuable information for geological mapping, environmental assessment, radon risk evaluation, and the management of natural radioactivity in Luxembourg.
