Abstract The Reisdorf borehole is located south of the Sauer River in northeastern Luxembourg. Core samples were recovered down to 158.3 m depth, while the interval to the final depth of 200 m is known only from cuttings. The borehole penetrates the lower Middle Muschelkalk, the Lower Muschelkalk (mu) and most of the Upper Buntsandstein (so). Originally intended as a drinking-water well, the project was abandoned due to excessive sulphate concentrations in the groundwater. The salinization of Buntsandstein aquifers and the occurrence of evaporites in the Lower Muschelkalk are discussed from a palaeogeographic and genetic perspective. Tectonic deformation is reflected by one or two normal faults and numerous associated inclined fractures. Their orientation, determined using the “OBI Image” method, indicates a stress regime mainly related to Plio-Pleistocene extension, although evidence of older deformation events is also present. Borehole wall images available between approximately 32 and 120 m depth provided valuable support for stratigraphic subdivision and reconstruction of changing depositional environments. During the Lower Triassic, the Reisdorf site occupied a tectonically controlled subsiding area. The Upper Buntsandstein and Lower Muschelkalk display predominantly distal, fine-grained lithofacies deposited in a relatively low-energy environment, making some stratigraphic subdivisions more difficult to identify than in neighbouring regions. Comparisons with the Trier-Luxembourg area highlight both the typical and locally distinctive facies characteristics. A notable grey claystone unit within the Upper Buntsandstein is rich in plant debris and locally mineralized. Palynological analyses yielded abundant, well-preserved pollen and spores, allowing dating to the lowermost Röt 2 and revealing similarities with the evaporitic basin facies of northern Hesse. These results strengthen the Buntsandstein stratigraphic framework west of the Rhine. The clay-rich Lower Muschelkalk also produced significant palynological evidence documenting alternating continental and marine influences typical of a shallow coastal environment.
